Exchange Server

When I install a cable modem to a proxy server (microsofts small business back office) I have to change the name of the server to the cr647299-a number so the cable modem will work but by doing this exchange server will not work. It cannot see the renamed sever (itself)and the exchange services fail to start. I also get the error dependant server or group failed to start. Everthing else seems to work fine. Help!

I do not use the Exchange server. I would guess that maybe it needs an account with the new name to run. Larry

Unfortunately I don't use Exchange server either. I don't know much about it, but thanks for your input anyways.

You have to go to DNS and create a new MX record for the server. If you don't know how to do this without further explanation then don’t try or you can do more damage than good. If that is the case, find someone certified in Exchange, because there is nothing worse than having everyone scream at you because they cannot get their mail.

That's exactly what I did. I told them to get the person that installed the system because I didn't know exchange. They acted like I was stupid and not qualified to call myself a computer "person". Oh, what is a person to do if you don't know everything about everything. They were my first real lesson about the mass computer ignorance that runs aboud in our little world. I shall strive to be perfect!
Thanks for your input though. I have back benched exchange while I am redoing my MCSE in 2000 along with my cisco certification.
