NT 4.0 SP5 & Win95
bohrmannj Jul-18-01 03:07 PM
Our business is having a problem w/a customer. It is an NT 4.0 Workstation server w/3 Win95 workstations (no domain; just workgroup). We have been getting errors on workstation POS2 (has performed an illegal operation & will be shut down immediately)...It is an intermittant problem. We are getting master browser warnings on the NT machine, as well as an occasional warning about not being able to allocate x # of work items. We have swapped NICs on the NT box & the workstation in question, we've tried a different hub, we've tried wiping & reinstalling the POS2 box, the cabling has been re-run, the user profile POS2 on NT box has been wiped & recreated, the user & passwd POS2 on POS2 box have been wiped & recreated, & POS2.pwl has been deleted & recreated. The problem continues to occur. I know this is very general information, but any help you can give me is much appreciated.

Thank you

‘…has performed an illegal operation & will be shut down immediately’ may not have anything to do with the network. Please provide the detailed error info the next time it happens.

See MS KB Article Q216171, Server Performance Degrades During Work Item Allocation, at http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q216/1/71.ASP? for the solution to the second problem. I think I would fix the second problem first just in case it was related to the first problem. Larry
