Well ok heres the prob. I am a college student so I take my laptop(computer b) to school and get on the t3 line. When I get home i try to get on my network again and it wont let me, neither computer will recoginze the other one.By the way i have a peer to peer network without a hub(yes i am using a crossover cable). Ive tried re assigning my protocals but i must be doing something wrong(i havent been doing this for very long and this is my first network). Anyway this is driving me crazy so any help would be usefull.

Your school network is probably dynamically assigning you an IP addie to get on their network, but at home you have no DHCP server. Your computer will just default to a bogus IP 169.xxx.xxx.xxx on 255.255.0.0.

Do you have netBEUI installed on both your computers? Click on add from your network screen and add this protocol to both if not. Then from the TCPIP settings for your network card unbind TCPIP from File and Print sharing. That may fix your problem right away. If not, Start, Run, winipcfg.exe on both computers and see if the subnets match or if you have conflicting IP addies.

Well first for responding i tried adding netbeui and still didnt get anything but when i went to winipcfg.exe i found that i have conflicting ip addresses on the ppp adapter. I have a fast eithernet pc card for my lap. and when i went to the other computer it didnt seem as if i had another eithernet adapter on there. I dont see how this could be seeing that the network used to work. Maybe im doing something wrong but thanks for sticking with me
