cat5 and cat5e

I've heard that it's not good to run cat5 cables outside the house for various reasons. But I've also heard that cat5e or cat5Plus cables can be run outside the house.
Has anyone run the cable outside their house? If so, what kind of cable? pvc? plenum? shielded?
Also, would anyone not recommend running the cat5e cable outside?
