Netbeui needed?

I am setting up a Netgear Router RP114 with a cable modem and two computers for a home network(one Windows XP 2000 home and one Win98).
Both Computers can access the cable modem, but the winxp computer can't see the printer I have on the Win98 machine (even though it has been shared. It appears I can ping the Win XP with the Win 98 computer, but when I try to ping the Win98 with the Win xp machine, it says that requests timed out.
The tech support at NETGEAR said I need to install NETBEUI on the Win xp machine.
Does that sound right?
Why do I need to use NET BEUI at all?
The 15 computer network at work shares things fine and all it uses is TCP/IP

My experience has been just the opposite. That is, if NetBEUI is installed on Win 98, etc., the computer can’t see an XP computer, etc. I would first remove all protocols except TCP/IP from all of the computers and do the following http://duxcw.com/faq/network/xprouter98.htm. It appears that I have found the problem. I have Norton Family Internet Security installed on the Win 98 computer and it was prohibiting me from seeing the Win xp shared folder--as well as keeping me from installing a win98 printer onto the winxp machine. When I disabled the entire Norton Internet Security it seems to work fine in both directions.
The advanced options in the Norton firewall allow me to set rules on inbound and outbound communications and I think there is some value in keeping the firewall, but I'm having a difficult time understanding the terminology used in the Norton Firewall Rule list to know how to set it up to allow communications with that computer.
I will try to find more info from Norton but if anyone has had experience in setting up rules to work harmoniously with a router and a home network and could point me in the right directionn I would appreciate it.

I had the same problem. What you need to do is to open Norton, and then click on Firewall. Then you need to select the second tab down and add the IP address of the XP system under Allowed. Then, do the same on the XP system. It then bypasses the firewall aspect of Norton for the specified IP addresses. It worked quite well for me.
