Network problem

I have a 2 PC network one running Win98SE the other WinXP Pro, connected through an SMC Barricade. From the Win98 I navigate the XP as if it's on one PC. I transferred about 290MB from the Win98 to Win Xp in 70 seconds.(Is that OK?) From the Win XP it takes ages to just access the Win98 through the network and I didn't wait long enough to try transferring the same file, so I don't really know how long it would take.
I have TCP/IP only installed, both PCs have 3COM nics.
Can you please help me with this problem?
Thanks in advance, and a Happy New Year to all. Lawrence

Yes.

See http://duxcw.com/faq/network/xprouter98.htm. There may be a cable problem… Try swapping cables and Barricade ports. Larry
