sharing an internet connection with two win 98 SE computers

I am able to share the files...I can do that EASILY!!! But for SOME reason I cannot get the internet connection to share...anyone with any ideas? I have tried every troubleshooting guide I can find!
I am using TCP/IP and not Netbuei to share..so I think I am almost there...
No problems with ANYTHING on the Host..the Client is the one I obviously have set up wrong. Please feel free to email me!!

I’ve never used internet connection sharing as i have a router, so I’m not really qualified to answer this question.
However, i would suggest you go to
http://download.cnet.com
and search for internet connection searching or something like that as there are programs that will do it all for you :O)

I have MSN internet connection and I use this little "dial up" thing that I created because I hate the interface they use. I just want to get online..I don't need all the special features.
I am still having trouble...but I found an AWESOME site that is loaded with information...

I am now completely "set up" but I can't get the client to achieve an IP from the ICS ... not sure what in the world I am doing wrong...

The thing is NOT able to browse..it does get its own IP address, but it gets it from the nic card that I have installed...not from the internet connection sharing tcp/ip...
I have NOT called and asked MSN for something extra..they are the ones that I have my ISP through..I have a modem that I use to dial up and then a 10/100 nic card that is working like a charm on file/printer sharing...but I am somehow not doing something right on the settings
HELP !! please?

Larry,
I have checked that setting so many times I can't even see straight. It is definitely NOT checked as a "use proxy" ...
The computer starts to look up a site and then says "DNS" and looks for the site..it seems like..on the c-drive of the host.
Also, it then will not open a search page when I type in an ip address like you gave me before.

Please shutdown both computers. Bring-up the ICS host computer first followed by the client computer.
Please connect to the Internet on the ICS host computer.
Please do the following on the client:
Start, Run, enter winipcfg, select the network adapter going to the ICS host, Release, and Renew. The IP address should go blank and then reappear. What is it?
Start, Programs, Accessories, MS-DOS Prompt to open a DOS window. In the DOS window, please enter as follows:
C:\windows>ping 192.168.0.1
What do you get as a result?
In the DOS window:
C:\windows>ping 216.92.56.121

I am going to go do that now...the thing is - I only have the "REALTEK nic card" on the other computer and when I have it release and then get a new one the computer locks up.
I will let you know what happens from this one.

Results...
192.168.0.1 - four packets sent and four received - 0% loss
pinging 216.92.56.121 on the CLIENT - 100% LOSS
pinging 216.92.56.121 on the gateway/host = 0% LOSS
I know it is something SOMETHING that I have in the setup of the TCP/IP ... I feel so stupid

I have gotten my pc's connected again and they can share files but when I try to install ICS on the gateway computer my machine locks up..EVERYTIME...I don't know what is going on...I decided to do a "reinstall" of Win98 and it went all the way through...but it still does its freezing..any suggestions?

No, there are no exclamation marks. As far as I know there are no conflicts at all..no ! and no X on the device manager..

Try uninstalling ICS before installing it (Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Communications, Details, as I recall). I hope that cable that the cat chewed through was replaced and not spliced. Larry
