XP Home Networking Problem

Recently I installed Windows XP on the two machines at my house. These machines share an internet connection (DSL) and both are connected to a hub...which is connected to the DSL modem.
After installing XP neither machine can see the other, though the network connection works fine.
Here are the things I have tried (to no avail).
- Removing the XP firewall (I plan to use ZoneAlarm)
- Installing netbeui and setting up to handle file and print sharing.
- Setting the isMasterBrowser in the registry of one machine to TRUE
Both computers are in the same workgroup.
I can ping the other machine by IP address but not by netbios name.
I am trying to avoid installing a second nic and using one machine as a gateway.
Does anyone have any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.

I think you need to adapters or two Internet IPs. A router would be the best solution by far (http://duxcw.com/faq/ics/waysshare.htm). Try enabling NetBIOS over TCP… Start, right-click My Network Places, Properties, select TCP/IP associated with the network adapter, WINS tab, and select Enable NetBIOS over TCP. Larry

Thanks for the reply!
I do have two separate IP addresses for these machines, dynamically assigned.
And also I did try enabling netbios over TCP/IP but still the computers were unable to see each other.
I also temporarily made a change in the hosts file to assign the current IP address of the other machine to the machine name I chose....and then I could ping it by its name, but still could not see it. (I undid this change also since the IP address is subject to change.)

Try removing NetBEUI and installing the IPX/SPX protocol. IX/SPX is routable and NetBEUI is not. Larry

Thanks a million for that tidbit. I installed the IPX protocol and bound file and print sharing to it and voila!!!!

When you say remove NetBEUI does that mean on all PCs or just on the client PC's leaving it on the host PC?

I meant all PCs. I found that an XP computer is the "Lone Ranger" in a network with NetBEUI running on any of the PCs. Other readers may have other experiences. I have connected five XP computers (XP Home and Pro, retail and OEM) to my shop/office network so far an all of them behaved that way. Larry
