new cable install looses internet but not ip address

Hi. 1st night with cable. Also with a bad headache. When surfing pages all seems ok until I
try to do anything using more bandwidth like downloads or listening to music files. Ive been
through network properties with the c.company several times. The modem indicators stay on steady
and i can release and renew my ip address at will, but in order to regain surfing ability, i have to reboot the pc. Then its ok again for a period until the next time it happens and again i must reboot btw, win 98se,at&t broadband,sb4100
modem wired by ethernet not usb. Maybe faulty nic?
it is a pull from another machine (3com 10/100)

Maybe or an IRQ problem. Try another PCI slot. I would inspect the Ethernet cable carefully (http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/network/cable/cable1.htm), especially if it is a long one. Could be an cable company problem. Need more info. Larry

Thanks for reply. The ethernet cable is the one that came with modem.I have rebuilt my tcp/ip
stack and the nic on the modem is set to obtain
auto. I havent set my lan static ip's yet but so far so good. next I'll set the statics and take it from there. Heres more info
nic 1 is 3Com Fast...3C905-TX
nic 2 is 3Com Fast...3C905B-TX
1 is set dynamic, 2 will be set static for lan
i only have tcp/ip running now. I gave up on ICS.
I will probably have to use a router for sharing. Too bad since only one other pc needs it and not very often. I also thought maybe since the nics are virtually identical could be a prob. It is confusing as well since u cant see all the nic info in winipcfg. If u need more info Ill be glad to reply. And thanks again for your service and

Set up the NIC connected to the modem to 10Mb not auto. Before u do this run winpcfg.exe and see the both cards IP addreses, the one that is not 192.168.?.? is the card that is connected to the modem. Then write down the adapter address # on this card. Run the 3com dignostics select the card with the same # and change speed value to 10 Mb. Have fun. Dont set static addy if not told by the cc ISPs.
