Setup router config for internet sharing
sanmeet May-09-02 09:53 AM
Hi all,

I just got Comcast cable modem internet installed in my house. I want to use my 3COM router to share this service with other PC's.
Currently I have 1 98SE machine connected to the cable modem directly and internet.
To go thru the router, I connected the cable modem with the 3COM router and then the PC with a port of 3COM. Then from the PC i type in 192.168.2.1. This is the default IP address of the router. It could not connect to the router. I know it works cause earlier I had DSL setup in my previous appartment and I was able to get everything going. Then I release all/ renew all configs and my PC was now able to get an IP address from the router and connect to it. Now I am stuck as to which option to choose for the router to connect to Internet. I choose Dynamic IP config but its not able to Reconfigure. Earlier with DSL, I was using PPP over Ethernet. From what I understand Cable modem is like LAN setup and works differently than a DSL. On my PC, I have workgroup defined as Comcast.net. Im not sure where I can tell the router about this workgroup.
Any help on this setup and which option to choose......thanks

How is the PC configured? It should be able to get an IP from the router even if the router is not connected to the MODEM. Larry

If I connect the PC to router, I can renew the IP's and it does get it from the router. The problem seems to be that the router is not able to reconfigure from the modem. Maybe I just need to switch off everything and then boot in order--> modem, router, PC. I am just not sure as to which option to choose for the router to connect to modem. Dynamic IP?? I guess or any other service type like PPP over Ethernet. Im sure a lot of viewers here have the setup and someone would just share how their setup is done. That would be helpful...

The MODEM may be married to the network adapterís Ethernet MAC address. See FAQ: Cable MODEM "Married" to an Ethernet MAC Address at http://duxcw.com/faq/ics/cablemac.htm for details on how to fix it. Larry
