Cable Internet Networking

Hi All,
I have a question. I'm gonna be networking mine and my parents houses together for Cable Internet. I'm gonna purchased a router
and all for the hookup. My question is the distance between
the router and my parents house is about 200-300 feet. I'm assuming I shouldn't just bury the cat5 cable. I'm assuming it would rot. Also would wireless be cost effective and work well? I've heard it's not
that great. Which is better, 802.11a or b? Any recommendations on kits or anything would be nice..

Just as a side note, most cable companies would frown at what you want to do.
