Hi, new to the forum here. I am attempting to network two computers in my home so that I can share direcpc two way satellite internet access between them.

One operates on Win 98. The other operates on Win ME. I have a PCI Fast Ethernet DEC 21143 based adapter in my Win 98 machine and a Realtek RTL8139(A)-based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter in my Win ME machine.

I followed an article off this website about networking two computers with win95/98.
So far, I have installed the network software, added the NETBEUI protocol, configured the primary network logon, and verified the Microsoft Networks Configuration. Also, I have identified the computers and the workgroup (same on both computers), verified the access control information, added file and printer sharing, and set up the sharing of disk drives and printers.

I set this up on both computers. I connected them with a crossover cable plugged into the adapters on each computer.
I restarted the computers and then went to see if the network existed by opening windows explorer and checking the network neighborhood.

Neither computer recognizes the other in the workgroup. I used two different crossover cables thinking that the first cable was faulty but that did not help.
I was also told that a router could work as a hub. I have a router so I tried networking through it, but that action did not work as well.

If anyone has any suggestions or advice, please let me know.

In what manner does the satellite connect to your pc, is it with a ethernet connection or is it USB?

The Workgroup name is the same, but the Computer names are different correct? Look at this and get the 2 computers networked together first and then we can get your internet going. http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/network/net2pc/intro.htm

yes, workgroup name is the same, but the computer names are different. The article you linked is the article that I followed and did step by step. I used two different crossover cables but the computers still do not recognize each other on the network. Each one does recognize itself though. I noticed though in that article that I may need to update my WIN 98 so that it will work with a plug n play network adapter.
Thing is... before I moved, I had high speed internet through my cable company. I had these same two computers networked with that connection. With that, the cable modem plugged into a router and then I had cables connected from the router to each network card on each computer. That was it! So simple. I was connected! I did not have to network the computers.

So, I would think that my WIN 98 desktop is compatible with an adapter or I would not have been able to network with the cable connection.

I would try to update my win 98 computer but that is my client and I do not have a connection for it yet. I may try to use dial up tomorrow, update it and see if that helps the problem.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks again.

This kind of problem is caused be a faulty crossover cable in most cases. Is it wired according to http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/network/cable/cable6.htm? Was it tested? I would go back to the service provider and ask for a sat box with an Ethernet Interface and use the router, which as you know is the best way by far to do it. Larry
