vpn? connect 2 pc's over the internet

Hi
I have a broadband connection & I want to be able to swap files with a friend on the same type of connection (about 1/2 a mile away).
Yahoo is too slow, can't find each other on winmx (probaly 'cos we are both using secondary connections, get no results with primary)
I have succesfully networked 2 pc's at home using ethernet cards & crossed utp, by reading through this forum.
Unfortunately I dont even know where to start... please help.

I would run an ftp server on each machine, you have a static ip so that wouldnt be a problem. Go to http://download.com.com/3000-2165-2487881.html?tag=lst-0-1 , it works pretty well. Dont forget you need an ftp client to access it or you can simply use your browser.
