Windows XP and 98 Peer to Peer connection

My friend and I are trying to set up a Peer to Peer connection using Windows XP and Windows 98. The CAT5 cable is okay, but his XP system just won't detect any type of network let alone have the right setup for a network to work. Does anyone know how to go through the setup to get the XP system ready for p2p network with 98?

I know the cable works...I tested it myself, I have a cable tester. It's just trying to get the network to work that is a problem. I know that NetBEUI isn't supported by Windows XP, but I remember reading somewhere that you still needed it to do a p2p network with windows XP.

Grrr...my friend bought a patch cable. His system keeps saying "Cable not plugged in" *sigh* That would most likely be the problem.

If your tester is simply one of those continuity testers that does nothing more than check that the correct pins are connected, it does not adequately test a twisted-pair network cable and guarantee that the cable will work. For one thing, it does make a difference which wires in the cable connect the pins. If you have someone in a local shop make (http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/network/cable/cable1.htm) you a crossover cable, suggest that you insist that they properly test it before leaving the store.

If you have the correct cable, Win XP will pick it straight and allow you to set up the network as you wish. I have tried this and it worked well.
