Cant get my network to share internet access?

I recently networked my home computers using linksys fastethernet kit. also using linksys a pcmcia card for my labtop. everything works fine as far as file and printer sharing. i can see both computers on each computer but i can not figure out how to share the internet connection? pleas help me!!! i am currently using 56k dial-up but i will soon be using a dsl connection. i would like to be able to know how to network both connections!!!

You need Internet sharing software (e.g., Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Me, SyGate) or a broadband router (e.g., SMC Barricade - http://www.smc.com/smc/pages_html/homef.html) to share the Internet. Sharing a DSL connection is very similar to a cable MODEM. See the following references for instructions, etc.:

I TRIED TO USE THE ICS BUT I CANT GET THE WIZARD TO START? I AM USING MSN AS MY CONNECTION. BOTH COMPUTERS ARE WIN 98SE. I NEED SOME REAL HELP. I CHECKED OUT THE LINKS YOU GAVE ME BUT I STILL NEED HELP!!!!!?????

Ever tried a proxy server. As long as you have one sure connection to the internet, a proxy server is the answer to all your problems.
One good one is analog proxy (freeware). Go to google.com search for analog proxy, find it, read the documentation install it and be done. You don't have to buy anything else besides the cables and hub(s) you already used to connect your network and your ISP service

I don't quite agree. In my experience, for small networks a broadband NAT router (see http://duxcw.com/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=read_count&om=230&forum=DCForumID2) is the best solution, albeit more expensive than free, and a good software NAT such as SyGate is the second best solution, and not free. I would take Win 98 SE ICS over some of the proxies I've seen. SyGate started-out as a proxy and can still function as a proxy, but it works better and is easier to configure as a NAT. Perhaps there is a better, easy to use Proxy; I haven't seen it. I'll take a look at your recommendation. Larry

I'm using LINKSYS etherfast Switched 10/100 network in a box and a LINKSYS instant ethernet combo pcmcia ethernet card. the server is connected with the 5 port hub and nic. it is runing win98se. the other computer is a laptop which i installed the pcmcia card. everything is hooked up correctly. i can share the printer with the laptop and i can see both computers in the network neighborhood. i tried to take out the netbui and just use tcp but when i specified the ip address to match the one of the server and also changed the subnet to 255.255.255.0 i recived an error saying the hardware and the ip does not match. the servers subnet is 255.255.0.0. i'm not sure what i am doing wrong and i am considering purchesing a proxy software such as wingate or sygate but i still would like to figure out my problems. by the way i am using a 56k dial-up. i am on the verge of throwing my whole network out the window!!!!!

Both should be 255.255.255.0. Set the dial TCP/IP settings in the dial-up adapter, not in the TCP/IP settings in the Control Panel, network. Larry

Hey Larry it's me again. Well i downloaded the Home Network 4.0 software from Sygate. Now my network is runing smoothly. I just wanted to thank you again for all your help and everyone else's as well!!!!! This site is the best site i found by far!!!!!!! I would appreciate any other info on products, software and books concerning Networking. Thanks again!!!!!!
