internet sharing (ICS) and outgoing mail error

HI,
I am using ICS to share a cable modem connection on two windows 98 SE computers. Both can access the net, each can be pinged from the other and I can share files between them. HOwever, I am having trouble sending email from the computer that is not connected directly to the modem. I have tried to change name of the outgoing mail server to that of the provider (rather than my regular university email outgoing server) but this has not worked - this solution worked only on the computer doing the sharing. Any thoughts?

I know you are trying to send, but you may be trying receive at the same time. A common configuration error is to set the incoming server to IMAP instead of POP3 for a POP3 server. I would check that first. Larry

Thanks. I am using Microsoft Outlook and it says it is POP 3 for both incoming and outgoing mail. The configuration seems to be the same as that of the computer with the direct connection to the cable modem (for which sending and receiving both work) but the sending part does not work for the computer sharing the connnection.

The outgoing mail server provided by my cable internet provider is simply "home" - somebody suggested that the problem may be that the computer that is sharing the access to the net does not have the provider's software on it and thus does not know to what outgoing mail server "home" refers. Any thoughts on how to change "home" so if refers to the actual server?
Would there be a script anywhere?

"home" is not a server on the Internet. Who is the provider, @home? Why not install the software on the client and see if it works? Larry

It seems that pinging "mail" gave me the full name of the server. It works now. Thanks for your thoughts

Try enabling DNS in the TCP/IP settings for the client. Larry
