cant network two computers

I have two computers and i would like to network them, but i cant. I am running windows me on one and win98 on the other. On my windows me box i have a netwrking wizard and i ran that and it allows you to make a disk to put the wizard on the other comp. so i ran the setup on both computers and they can only see themselfs. so i checked and they didnt have net beui so i put that on both......still can only see themselfs...client for microsoft networks is the primary and i get six lines of info in a route print............please help

The disk that u created using with network wizard, is used for internet sharing, which means that both the computers have to be able to communicate first.
right click on the NN on the desk top and check to see if u have then protocols and serveices installed on both the machines ,then
on the ID tab add both the machines to a workgroup.

I do have them connected with an rj 45 crossover cable. Yes both have tcp/ip and net beui and client for microsoft networks are default and they are both set on WORKGROUP

First, inspect the cable ends and see if it is really a crossover cable… see http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/network/net2pc/hardware.htm and http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/network/cable/cable6.htm. Next, let's see if the computers can talk to each other at the very lowest level. Most Network Interface Cards (NICs) have LEDs on them. What are they telling you? Most NICs have a diagnostic program that comes on a floppy with the NIC. Suggest running it. The loopback test will fail, which is of no concern. What are the rest of the test results? Larry

ok sorry it must not be a crossover cable i did see one wire that doesnt match so i thought it was...can i make it crossover? only one of my nics have led and the act light blinks sometimes and the link stays off. I do not have a diag disk for any of my nics cause one is built in to the motherboard and the other is from an old comp.............do i need to buy a cross over or can i do anything else?

the disk is for ics but it is also supposed to setup the lan at the same time
