minor problem in sharing network internet connection

Can anybody help? I have successfully installed my internet network sharing software in windows me. All works very well but every so often the modem jumps into life and connects for no apparant reason. I have checked for programs that are running in case any of those are causing it but to no avail. I have also checked the other 2 pc's connected on the network for the same things.
Any help or advice would be most welcome. Thanks in advance.

turned off active desktop last night and I thought that had done it. Sadly this morning it dailed again. This afternoon I uninstalled and then reinstalled the share software and so far at this moment things seem alright. If anybody knows different please let me know, Thanks Larry!!
