Help on Home Networking

I am new to this and I need some advice please.
I went to the local shop and asked what I needed for networking my 2 pc's. They told me 3 cards,
1 rj-45(cross) and software. So I installed 2 on my main pc and 1 in the other. Installed sygate 4.0 - connected both pc's with the rj-45. I have sympatico(DSL). Well my computer works fine and
has access to the internet but the other pc doesn't connect.
Please help this newbie.

P.S. When I go to Network Neighbourhood I can't access it.

Uninstall SyGate. Check the network adapters and cable by verifying that the LEDs on the adapters indicate a good link and activity. Run the diagnostics that came with the adapters. The loopback test will fail because you do not have a loopback plug, and is of no concern. If you have problems with these steps, you probably have a bad cable, but one of the adapters could be bad or there is an IRQ conflict, etc. Follow the steps at http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/network/net2pc/intro.htm to get a NetBEUI network going. Install TCP/IP according to http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/network/net2pc/intro.htm and test disk and printer sharing. Connect to the Internet, install the SyGate Host on the computer with the Internet connection, and install the SyGate client on the other computer. Larry
