system hangs when trying to access other computer
Knucklehead Jan-03-01 08:47 PM
I have internet access on both machines but they don't seem to want to communicate with each other. Internet and email function normally on both machines. I am running Windows 98 on both machines. I am getting a lot of system hanging when I try to access the other computer. At times they see each other but access is not possible. I have tried reinstalling both adapters a couple of times. Also when I go to reboot the they get hung up on the windows is shuttin down logo screen. Somehow I tend to think this problem is related to my networking problem as it disappears when I make changes to protocols ect.. Any ideas would be appreciated.

How are the computers connected together? Are you sharing one Internet connection? What kind of connection? Etc? Larry

I am using a 5 port Aopen mini hub connected with straight thru Cat 5 cable. I am sharing one cable modem internet connection. I have the cable modem going into uplink and the 2 computers are on 2x and 3x. All LEDS are lit. They tend to blink a lot and it seems like the blinks are in sync with the blinks on the cable modem. I don't know if that is relavant. I did have the whole network functioning normally for about 24 hours and I rebooted one of the machines and it has been all downhill since. I exchanged the hub thinking it was faulty. I do have one of the cables routed next to a cable line if that means anything and it does cross paths with a 220v dryer line. By the Great site!

Do you have two static IP addresses from your service provider? Larry

Well then that is probably your problem, or at least one problem. To put two computers on the Internet at the same time you must have two distinct IPs, one for each of them, or one of them must run Internet sharing software to act as a proxy of NAT for the other one. In those cases the cable MODEM has to be connected to the PC with the proxy or NAT software, usually with a second network adapter. Or, you have to have another box (router) that is performing that function for both of them. In that case the router is connect to the hub (or has a multi-port switch built-in to support the PCs directly) and the cable MODEM is connected to the Wide Area Network (WAN) port on the router. See our Network and Internet Sharing Guide at http://duxcw.com/digest/guides/network/index.html for Internet sharing how to articles and the SMC Barricade review for details. Larry

Thanks for the advice Larry, would you recommend going to 98 SE or using something like Wingate or Winproxy on the software side of things?

I recommend a hardware router. I have an SMC Barricade (http://duxcw.com/digest/Reviews/Network/smc/smc7004br/smc7004br.htm). They cost about $100. The Linksys routers work well, but the SMC unit cost less and has a built-in printer server. The SMC unit, cable MODEM (or DSL box or external dial-up MODEM), and printer are the only things that have to remain on for any computer on the network to access the Internet and use the printer. Of the available software solutions, SyGate (http://duxcw.com/digest/Reviews/Network/sygate/sygate.htm) worked best for me. I have not, however, used the most recent version of SyGate. Larry
