2 pc network problem

hi,
im trying to get my two pcs networked for gaming fun! but i can't do it
here is the configs for the both of them
(both have the SAME ISDN cards,and NIC's are by same make,one has WOL one don't,)

Client for MS Networks
Dial up Adapter

nv100r ii/iii fast ethernet nic
NDISWAN---isdnlink00
NetBEUI----nv100r ii/iii fast ethernet nic
TCP/IP-----Dial up Adapter
File and Printer sharing for MS networks

each pc has its own name and the workgroup for them is WORKGROUP and they both have Share-level acces ticked
HDD's are shared(both Share name -c and full access with no password)
and the man in the shop swore that it was a cat5 crossover cable.
also both pcs are using the same copy of win98se
please can you help me

Compare the ends of the cables to http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/network/net2pc/hardware.htm and http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/network/cable/cable6.htm. Check the LEDs on the network adapters. If the ends (plugs) aren’t correct and/or you don't have a solid Link LED, take that cable back to the swearing tech and have him prove that it works on his network by copying some files with it connecting two of his PCs. If he can't do that, he shouldn't be selling network cables. Larry
