simple network(error)

i followed all the instructions here: http://www.duxcw.com/digest/Howto/network/net2pc/intro.htm
for a simple connection between 2 computers with no security or anything, just for file transfer.
but i keep getting an error saying that it cant find the other computer, and it is in network neightbour hood.
p.s:before i wasnt using a cross over cable and the other cpu didnt even show now i got a cross lover cable the other cpu show but i keep getting the error every time i try to acess it. and i made sure i have files sharing on both pc's what could be the problem???

Probably a bad cable… Inspect the cable with both plugs up and the clips facing away. The sequence of wires at one end should match one of the diagrams at the top of http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/network/cable/cable6.htm and the sequence of the other end should match the other diagram. Was the cable tested in a working network? Larry

thanks for the reply
checked both cables and they match the diag.
do you have to lgon windows throught the dialogue box. if you press escape or just ok with out typeing the password will it still work.
and waht are some other minor things that i could be over looking

You have to logon to Windows or the Client for Microsoft Networks to network. I believe the Microsoft Family logon will also work, but I do not install it. Larry
