Hard Drive Maintenance

I have a system running windows 98 se. The problem is that I can't get it complete a scandisk or defrag. The tools start up ok but they never finish. I have check off the "scandisk has restarted 10 times" message. I can run scandisk from dos mode. I have Norton 7.5 corp edtion for anti virus. I have dissable this before running scandisk. I have disabled everything except Exployer using task manager. The disk drive is a 20 gig with lots of free space, 64 meg ram, 500 mhz AMD K6 with 3D now. Can the Norton cause this problem?

Hi there,
Have turned off screensaver, and just about everything except explorer. It just runs and runs. Can't finish scandisk and can't do a defrage in windows. I don't know? Is there a problem with the corp version of Norton anti-virus 7.05? I can't find anything out at the Norton site.

Boot it to a Startup floppy (http://duxcw.com/digest/Fromshop/software/windows/startup/startup.htm and http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/software/windows/winme/startup/page1.html) and see if scandisk will run from there. Larry

ok try this start in safe mode, scan disk then defrag both from there. after that reboot.

The power management is set to on all the time. It tells me that the drive is locked and in use. I have turned everything off. I get the same message in safe mode. I'm running into this more and more on these larger drives with scandisk and defrag problems. I'm seeing it in 98, 98se and ME.

I haven't seen the problem yet, except when something is running and is changing the hard disk so defrag has to start over. If you have a copy of winstone or winbench (http://www.zdnet.com/etestinglabs/filters/benchmarks/), see if it will run. Also, it has a Startup Manager that will turn-off everything (and turn it back on when you are done). Larry
