Non System Disc Error

I have a Pent.2 box that gives me the 'non-system disc error'at start-up. No disc in drive, have swapped out a drive and cable. light came on continuously with the 'replacement' drive, but no light with the old one. Drive won't even recognize a Win98 boot disc at start-up, just get the same message, no matter what I do. Also tried to tell system that there was no a: present in the computer by changing CMOS setups and unplugging drive.
Any ideas?

i went through this with a brand new motherboard ... very annoying ....
Could be the Floppy drive controller ....
If you have just put a new floppy drive on the PC ... try reversing the cable on the floppy drive end........
If the floppy drive light is staying on ,the cable is on wrong.. also any disk in the floppy at the time will be corrupted....
On the cable are redots = pin 1

Thanks waddy. I'm kinda thinking it's the board. Nothing had been done to this PC before I started getting the error message; i.e. a new floppy drive. Looks like the controller is part of the board on this one. Was the mother board the problem with yours?
