Crazy HDD

I`ve problem with my HDD. Model is Quantum Fireball LCT 08 13GB.
For some time I hear strange mechanical noise from it.
When I start my computer, HDD works for 5 to 10 seconds and then it starts to make those noises. I`ve feeling that the heads are jumping up and down and after that the computer won`t recognize HDD any more.
After plugging out power cable from HDD and turning back on it works again for few second and then it stops (with "jumping heads" noise).
Is the problem with mechanical or electrical part of HDD.

Could be either or both. It doesn’t matter. The drive has had it. Get your data off from it. Putting it in a refrigerator for about 20 Minutes might keep it running long enough to get data off from it. Larry

I agree with Larry. Back up your valuable data files - the drive might still be under warranty although I'm not sure if you'd really want a replacement with the same unit.
We have hundreds of Gateway computers at work which have the same Quantum hard drive model as yours. Mine started acting up a few weeks ago by making occasional loud clanging noises. Finally it crashed and was replaced.
Our data systems technician told me that they've experienced many problems with these Quantum hard drives with the first symptom being the loud noises.
