This seems to be the common problem with everyone's CD-RW drive it seems. My new ACER CD-RW drive only works about 10% of the time, i.e. can't see there's a blank disc in the drive and says device not ready. Well, This is the second new drive I have tried (different brands too) and I've switched every cable, switched location ( master/slave combo's), reloaded the Adaptec software, tried CDClone freeware, and it still does the same thing when I want to copy a disc???? It MAY work 1 out of 10 tries, I eve reboot and that doesn't work. This is very frustrating.

That hasn't been my experience. It's kind of hard to say more without information on the computer and operating system. Larry

Given the information you have given it is likely that the drive needs to be cleaned. (I mean the Laser lens) A blank disk is not really blank!! There IS info on the disk wich contain data of the capacety and a pre-written Guidance Track. A written CD contains much more contrast in reflections than a blank CD. Therefore a dirty Laserlens meight be able to read standard and recorded disks, while unrecorded disks are unreadable. Victor.
