CD-Rom

I have installed a cd-rom in a compact computer using windows 98. When I start windows the cd-rom is not there. IHave gone systms and looked at the device manager and there is a exclamation mark on the hard drive controller. I tried to delete the controller but it would not allow me to. I have rebooted the computer in the safe mode and I see the cd-rom in device manager. I am not sure how to correct this problem. Can you give me a step by step advice to correct trhis. Thank you.

It is a compaq Deskpro 2000. The CD-Rom I bought is a Samsung. This computer was donated by a bank for an after school program. When we got it, it was erased completely. I installed the CD-Rom and reformatted the hard drive using windows 98. After windows was installed the cd-Rom never showed up in my computer. The device manager shows Hard Disk Controllers
Intel 82371SB PC Bus Master IDE Controller
Primary IDE Controller ( dual fifo)
(!)Secondary IDE Controller (dual fifo)
I tried to delete the Secondary IDE Controller and could not.
When I start the computer in the safe mode the device manager show the cd-rom.

The computer has two IDE interfaces or one? How is the CD-ROM connected? On the same cable as the hard disk or on the secondary IDE interface? Larry

The Cd-Rom connected to the secondary IDE.

You may have to enable the secondary using Compaq's system setup, or whatever they call it, which I hope was not erased, because it is on a special maintenance partiton on the hard disk on most Compaqs. If it is there, you should be able to access the Compaq setup menus by hitting the F10 key during the bootup when the cursor is flashing in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. After you go through this you will know one reason why I don't like Compaqs. There are others. Larry

I tried to access the compaq setup by hitting F10 key and nothing happened, windows loaded. Is there another way to access compaq setup?

I believe (not sure) it can be done in Windows with a Compaq utility that is installed there when it comes from the factory, but I have never done it that way and you have probably wiped it out. The F10 thing has to be timed just right. I'd try it a few more times. Otherwise, you'll have download and install http://www.compaq.com/support/files/deskpro/us/locate/4_62.html. Have fun! Larry

Just wanted you to know that I got it to work. I had to change the jumper on the back of the CD-Rom to the first position. When I rebooted and went to My Computer the D drive was there. Thanks for you help. God Bless.. ED
