windows me

how can i format hd to remove everything
me does not have dos. is there a program to do this? i want to use 98 se.
laptop 4 gig 256 ram 266 mhz no built in 3.5
has usb 3.5. also looking for 3.5 interchangeable
drive quantex comp model ts30h1
any info would be greatly appreciated

See if it will boot to either of your Windows CD's. There may be a CMOS Setup setting that will have to be changed to tell the computer to boot to the CD-ROM drive. Larry

i have changed cmos to boot to cd , put in 95b ,
says can't go backward , put in Me starts to load,
then says can't find a reg. file. so i need to
somehow need to format i think.obviosly a'm not
that comp. literate. maybe i could hook 2 comp.
togeather and use one to format notebook ,or
buy some program to do it

When booting to 95B, can you Esc, Ctrl-C, or quite to the DOS prompt? I can’t find my copy of 95B. Larry

Are you trying to Delete WindowsME and re-install with Windows98se? or just re-install WindowsME from scratch?
Either way, make sure you backup first. I know it's obvious, but I like to include that disclaimer.
*** Also the below proceedure should work with both Windows98se and WindowsME. As should the other message.
You can toss the WinME CD in and boot with that. Then you should get a prompt asking to Boot with or without CD-ROM Support. Select the Boot with CD-ROM Support. It should drop you to the command prompt and load a "Minimal" set of programs, including Fdisk and such. When it finishes booting, it will create a Ram Disk with the utilities, either Drive D: or Drive E: . They will also be located on the WinME Disk in one of the sub folders (utils/dosstuff) I think. You can also boot your current Windows and create an Emergency Startup disk in the Control Panel | Add/Remove/Programs menu. That will load the tools you need on drive A:

i only have usb 3.5 drive & cd drive.
i will try all ideas in a few days and let you
know what happens.

With Windows95b you could F8 (On Boot before the Windows Logo) to get the list of options to include dropping to DOS prompt. Of course if you have confirmed you have Backed up your important files, and that you can boot from the WindowsME CD Rom, you could just exit Win95b using Shutdown/Exit to DOS, and run FDISk and remove all the partitions to wipe out the HD, then reboot with the WinME cd which will configure the Partitions and such since they would missing.
