after the splash screen, goes to a DOS prompt with the message: HIMEM.SYS not found.
Can I just copy the HIMEM file from the Start-up disk to the C:/WINDOWS directory to correct?
My friend says he started deleting duplicate files that Norton Utilities indicated he probably didn't need.

I used the DOS Copy command to replace the HIMEM file into the C:/WINDOWS directory, and the system then booted. Interesting, I hadn't used DOS in so long it took a couple of tries before I got the correct verbage ... The system pauses for a few seconds at the Menu offering the selection of Normal-SafeMode-Step-by-Step, etc. ANy thoughts about that one?
Either way, I think I'll dust off your "How-To" install Win 98 instruction and do a clean install...

Windows is probably not shutting down correctly. My guess: another missing file, such as the .wav file with the shutdown sound. Larry
