Any special procedures for Windows ME for...

Has anyone ever installed a new motherboard with sound, video, modem on-board to a hard drive with Windows ME without fdisking and formatting it? Apparently since this is my friend's PC and he does not have Windows ME on CD, I have to keep the hard drive as is. Are there any special procedures for Windows ME to recognize the new motherboard with its video, modem, and sound on-board chips and settings?

All of the files necessary to do the install should be in C:\windows\options\install. You should be able to install on top of the present installation from there with setup. You will need the Product Key (http://duxcw.com/faq/win/prodkey.htm ) before starting. As always, Windows will go through a lot of gyrations when it sees a new motherboard, etc. and may not install properly, and may not even boot to Windows again. There could be all sorts of problems. One way you could do a clean install is to copy all of the files in C:\windows\options\install to another hard disk drive, temporarily connect that drive that drive to the computer, as you would a CD-ROM and install per http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/software/windows/winme/install/inst.html. To avoid a regrettable mistake, fdisk and format his drive before connecting the other drive (especially if it yours). Larry.

I just want to give you ALOT of THANKS for helping me out. Just one thing though, looking at the HDD for the the folder C:\windows\options\install and noticed it only had the files smgr.dll and vserver.vxd. However, I noticed that a folder named CABS next to INSTALL. Here were all the setup files. Yet, without Larry, I was lost.

That's not the way it is on my PC and the Win Me setup made those folders and put the cab files in install, not cabs. cabs would be the logical place for them, however. Larry

I am not one to disagree with you, but I found all the cabs in CAB files in CABS. Somehow or for some reason good ol' Microsoft decided to the change their rules on this version. I don't know what happened but I recommend anyone to look carefully in the folders.

I agree with your conclusion. There nothing wrong at all with disagreeing with me or anyone. I'm still learning things and will never know as much about networking and computers as I would like. Larry
