WIN ME won't shut down....

Tired to uninstall/install OS,format hard drive.My Gateway 633 won't shut down OS;only standby works.Used defrag,scan disc,selective start-up,NG.Have to uncheck all programs at startup in order to shut down later.Anyone have any clues?

Uncheck one of those startup programs at a time until you find which one is causing the problem. Larry

Tried that,Larry.As I start to re-check programs at start-up the lack of shutdown starts. The only other error message i got was running Tweak98,it found a System error,code=22(0x16) ACPI IRQ Holder,System\028,06/08/2000 in the enum\ACPI. May or may not be related. I'll keep trying.

Got it! Disabled the 3COM Ethernet adapter:shutdown OK. Need to find driver for it again. Apparently the one I have on file is corrupt.
