Missing vxd

Toshiba laptop running win 98. The Intel PCI network adapter apparently not working. I try reinstalling but I miss the vital driver disk, I download i8255x_35.zip and still doesnt work, device listed with error. I decide to forget about it and run windows without the PCI ethernet adapter but there are several messages on startup showing system.ini problems, vxds missing. Apparently windows is looking for the files for the PCI adapter. How do I disable it so that my PCI ethernet adapter is disabled and I have no errors reported on startup as I source the correct device drivers?

Start, Run, Settings, Control Panel, Network, remove, reboot. Still a problem... Control Panel, Sytem, Device Manager, remove any network adapter drivers (shouldn't be any). Still a problem, Start, Run, msconfig, system.ini and win.ini... comment-out the offending lines. Then there is the Windows registry... Start, run, regedit, help, backup, search...
I would persist in trying to obtain and install the driver. Info on it may be in the before mentioned locations and in Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Info... Larry

I have sent for the driver because this laptop will have to be used on my LAN later anyway.
