Directx8.1 not working in Windows 2000!

Tryed to install Directx8.1 in Windows 2000 but an error message pops up : This application was not designed for windows 2000 please get the windows 2000 version.
I don't understand the message shoudn't Directx 8.1 work on Win 9x Me and 2000?

Are you trying to install DX8.1 from a driver package or game controller package with a WIN9X installation program?
Why not go directly to the MS WIN2K update page and download DX8.1 directly??
In your IE Tools menu, select "Windows Update" and follow the instructions.

I actually got the directx 8.1 directly from the microsoft website
Secondly i suspected that i might need to download the Windows 2000 update , was trying to avoid that since it is a substancial download and i'm on dail up. Any other suggestions

You got DX8.1 directly from MS Update and it doesn't work?? Frankly, I find this incredible. Which WIN2K Service Pack are you using?

I finally found the windows 2000 version which works ok its call directx8.1NTeng on microsoft directx website, this one they say was designed specifically for windows 2000...I was unaware that they had a specific version for windows 2000.
