very slow installing games

since a format and install of win98se on p3.450 installing games is very slow,twenty to thirty minutes,but they play ok and fast enough.i put in a new samsung 52x cdrom.i have usb cable 128k.i have creative disc detector which came with soundblaster 128.also i have legacy drivers installed for when i play dos games..should i be disabling anything before installing games,ive tried shutting down disc detector,no good,any help appreciated.

Turn-on DMA for the CD-ROM drive in Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager, Computer, CD-ROM, select the drive, Properties, Settings, check the DMA checkbox, ignore warning for a 52X drive, and restart when prompted. Windows usually isn't "smart" enough to do that automatically on a new install. Larry
