It would be a good idea to review the soundboard manual
before installing it. It seems that every time I install a Creative
soundboard, the procedures change. I have a SoundBlaster Live in my
computer and the installation of that board was quite different than this
one.
142. A good location for the soundboard is the third
PCI slot from the right. With the computer unplugged insert the board,
screw it down, and make sure it is seated properly.
143. Plug the audio cable from the CD-ROM drive CD_IN
jack on the sound card with the red wire oriented towards the rear of the
computer.
144. Refer to the Installation and Operating Instructions
for the SoundWorks PCWorks Speaker System and install the speakers (the instructions
are quite good and do not need to be repeated here).
You may want to skip this step until the computer
is completed and is put in its final location. I use a known-good,
amplified bench speaker for initial sound board testing.
145. Turn the Speaker System volume control all the
way down (furthest counter clockwise) and boot-up the computer.
If you leave everything at the default
volume settings there is a very good chance that the speakers will start
playing at an extremely loud level when you first boot-up Windows, after
installing the soundboard drivers. The volume may be loud enough
to damage the speakers.
146. Tip the computer back to its upright position,
and plug-in and power-up. Windows will detect the board. Insert
the Creative CD in the CD-ROM drive. If the CD autostarts and opens
a Window, close the Window. Instruct Windows to search for the best
driver for the sound board. It should detect drivers on the CD twice. In
both cases it will display a list of drivers for various languages. Choose
the appropriate language version of the drivers. When prompted to restart
Windows, remove the CD and restart Windows.
147. After adjusting your volume and you should hear "The
Microsoft Sound" when Windows first starts. Insert the Creative
CD and install the reaming software, as desired. I would not install
DirectX from the CD.
If an installation CD does not autostart, click Start,
Run, and browse to setup.exe, install.exe, etc. on the CD.
148. Remove the CD and put it in its envelop and
put the envelop in the motherboard box.
