Hewlett-Packard 8100i SureStore
CD-Writer Plus
Last updated: 07/29/03
The
Hewlett-Packard 8100i SureStore CD-Writer Plus drive is my current choice
for an internal CD burner. It reads at 24X (max), writes
to CD's at 4X, and writes to rewritable CD's at 2X. You can make/copy
digital and audio CD's, and backup your hard disk to rewritable CD's.
FIRST IMPRESSION. The quality
of 8100i is accented by its sculptured blue and gray front. It looks
better than any CD-ROM I've seen. The eject button even looks better.
ITEMS INCLUDED. The drive comes
with almost everything, including an IDE cable and mounting screws. Add
an audio cable, a rewritable CD, a write-once CD, quick- install instructions
(for "dummies"), a generous collection of software, a box which
will survive a shipper with a hangover, and you have package which beats
most, if not all, of the CD-ROM drives, for example, on the market--to many
of which are sold without even an audio cable.
MANUAL. The User's
Guide is in pdf format and installs
on your hard disk from CD. The CD includes a copy of Adobe's Acrobat
Reader (needed for reading pdf files) for those who don't have it. Because
the entire manual is copied to your hard disk, you don't need the CD
to read it. This makes it handy and quite fast--faster, to me at
least, than hunting for and digging through a paper manual. The
manual is very complete, well organized, clearly-written,
and extensively illustrated.
