HARD DISK DRIVE GUIDE
Introduction
Last updated: 2/5/2002
This
is the first in a series of articles which will comprise the Dux Computer
Digest Hard Disk Drive Guide. When completed, this guide will
cover hard disk drive fundamentals, performance, compatibility, buying, installation,
troubleshooting, and data recovery. This is a "living" document.
It will evolve as it is written and published.
No guide of this kind can cover every hard disk, computer,
or situation. However, the material presented herein should provide a good
basis for understanding the various processes involved. Initially,
to keep the scope of the guide within manageable constraints, the following
constraints will be applied:
- The drive is a recent IDE ATA/33 or ATA/66 hard disk.
- The computer motherboard has an Award BIOS.
- The operating system is Windows 95, 98, or 98 Second
Edition.
A degree of background and theory is required to establish
a proper context for the hands-on portions of the guide. The objective
of these parts of the guide will be simplify the technical aspects while
conveying enough knowledge to appreciate, install, and troubleshoot hard
disk drives.
