CD and DVD Drive Guide
(Called "unit" in this document since it can be any of the above mentionned devices)
(This document is in applience to IDE / ATAPI devices, exept for the cleaning and handling
part)
01: Installation. (Mechanically / electrically)
01-01 There must be a free 5¼" bay available in the computer where the unit
is to be installed.
01-02i Check the jumper next to the Dataslot and set it in one of the next positions:
a As Slave if you put it WITH the main Hard drive on the Primairy IDE channel.
b As Master if you want it to be as the FIRST, or only unit on your Secondairy IDE
channel. (If as first, set the other unit as Slave!)
c As Slave if you want it to be as the Second unit on your Secondairy IDE channel.
(Be sure that the first unit on the Secondairy IDE is set to Master.)
01-03 Shut down your computer, disconnect it from main power and open the casing.
01-04 Take out the protective front plate of the desired 5¼" bay and shove the unit,
Dataslot-first, into the bay. (The eject-button should be located on the right-bottom
side of the unit's faceplate, Otherwise you have shoved it in upside down.)
01-05 Once shoved into place, alighn the faceplate with the rest of the front and secure
the unit on both sides with 2 screws per side (Should be delivered in the packaging).
01-06i The colored / marked wire of the IDE cable MUST face the POWER connector of the unit
otherwise it will not work. (Neither will fit in a new system)
a If to be connected to the Primairy IDE, get the middle connector of the cable
that goes from the Mainboard to the Hard drive and connect this to the Dataslot
on the unit. (Could be quite a Hassle, you meight need a longer IDE cable or
physically move the Hard drive.)
b If connected to the Secondairy IDE as First / Only unit, get the end-connector
from the IDE cable that goes to the Secondairy IDE on the Mainboard.
c If connected to the Secondairy IDE as second unit, get the middle-connector
from the IDE cable that goes to the Secondairy IDE on the Mainboard.
01-07 Connect the 4-wire audioconnector to the unit, and connect the other end to the
approperiate connector on your soundcard. (A special fastening clip must be on
top-side on the unit)
01-08 Attach the 4-pin Powerconnector to the unit, the Yellow wire must face the outside
of the unit.
01-09i If enough free bays, leave one bay empty between the top of the unit and any other
installed unit to let it be capable of releasing its heat. (Especially for Burners!!)
01-10 Continue with the next, closing the system is to be done if it IS working correctly.
02: Installation. (Software / CMOS / Windows)
02-01 Plug in the main power and start up your computer.
02-02 Press DEL (Or the approperiate key(s)) to enter CMOS setup.
02-03 Select auto detect or CD-ROM for the approperiate IDE channel where the drive was
connected to during installation.
02-04 Save the settings and boot your Operating System.
02-05i If booting to windows 95 or newer, check if you can read a data CD in the newly
installed unit. (A disk is to be inserted with the DATA side facing the tray bottom!)
a If OK, close Windows, shutdown the computer and close the casing.
b if NOT OK, double-check everything above to be sure if it is correctly done.
02-06i If booting to DOS, install the drivers who came on floppy disk with the unit.
Reboot and try if you can read a data CD in the newly installed unit.
(A disk is to be inserted with the DATA side facing the tray bottom!)
a If OK, shutdown the computer and close the casing.
b if NOT OK, double-check everything above to be sure if it is correctly done.
02-07i If you have installed a CD- or a DVD burner Install the software that comes on
CD-Rom with the unit.
02-08i If you have installed a DVD reader, install the DVD videoplayer that comes on
CD-Rom with the unit.
03: handling.
03-01 NEVER push in or pull out the tray with exessive force!! It will damage the motorised
parts very quickly.
03-02 NEVER put in 2 disks at once! If it fits, It will wear out the spindle bearings
twice as fast and you can scratch the laserlens due to the thickness of the stack.
02-03 Do NOT let the tray be open for extended periods! Dust, moisture and smoke will
settle down in the unit, cousing malfunction or even a NON functional unit.
02-04 As long as you keep the tray closed, and close it directly after changing, inserting
or taking out a CD, you should not have any problems for years to come.
02-05 If you are a smoker, please learn to yourself that you blow your smoke AWAY from yur
computer since smoke will impair optical and machnetical units overtime.
(Allso put your ash tray far away sins smoking sigarettes are equal as bad)
04: Cleaning. (Only to be done by someone who IS well known with delicate procedures)
04-01w Be careful if you use the standard cleaning CD's.
They are prune to damage the laser lens sooner or later.
This is beceause the Laserlens is suspended in a strong machnetic field where a
2-axis voice coil mechanism will move the lens vertically and horizontally.
Since the brushes of the cleaning CD will slam the laserlens out of position
everytime they passes it, the supplywires of the Voice coils can eventually break,
resulting in a non working unit.
(I had even one case where the whole lens assembly was knocked out of the machnetic
field and was found back on the bottom of the drive.)
04-02w The next procedure WILL void the warrantee!! Only do this if you WANT this, or if
the warrantee has allready expired.
04-03i Needed: Alcohol 96%, a few cotton tips, a small philips screwdriver (#0), a normal
philips screwdriver (#1) and a good memory to remember where each part was.
04-04 Start your computer in DOS mode and press the EJECT button of the unit that must be
cleaned. (You will soon find out why)
04-05 WITHOUT closing the unit, shut down your computer, disconnect it from main power
and open the casing.
04-06 Detach all cables to the unit that must be cleaned.
04-07 Unscrew it and shove it out of its bay.
04-08 Unscrew the screws that holds together the casing.
04-09 Take off the lids of the casing. (Be careful with the faceplate!! there are notches
who easily breaks off!!)
04-10 If the laserlens is covered by a sheet, flip it backwards or unscrew it to reach the
laser lens.
04-11w In the next steps, do NOT apply more pressure than just the feeling that you are in
contact with the lens!!!
Otherwise you wil damage the lens surface and the Voice coil positioning system!
04-12 Dip one of the cotton tips in alcohol and gently clean the laserlens with it.
work with circulair motions from center to edge.
04-13 Immidiately take a new cotton tip and dry the lens with it. (Repeat it if it is not
dry in the first run)
04-14 Reassemble the unit and built it back in the computer
04-15w Do not clean it very often!
You will eventually shave off the blue anti-reflection coating of the lens surface
which result in a "Visually impaired" unit.
Only clean it if you have trouble in reading CD-R's who reads flawlessly in an other
unit.
