Search Engines

Q. Search engines are proving not to be a reliable
source for web site visitors these days. What is your experience?
A. That's not true. I receive about 3,000
search engine referrals a day from the 10 search engines I track (I maintain
an extensive Excel spreadsheet of Analog
statistics, which has evolved over time) and there are many more
search engines than that. There is a high correlation between my search engine
referrals and total page requests. Google is by far the most important one.
Also, Yahoo uses Google. On the average, over a month's time, each visitor
looks at about five of my pages. Again, do not waste time trying to tweak
search engines (and don't pay someone to do it for you). It does not
work. It can actually be counterproductive and get your site dropped.
