Pauses during game playing

I have an 333 AMD K-6 2 and while playing a game with a CD, I will get an intermittent 'stutter' for lack of a better word. It's like the whole program pauses and part of a word gets repeated(ie. Hi, my name is C-C-C-Casey). The video stops also. Then the program proceeds as usual. Also, while just motoring around in programs or on the desktop, the mouse pointer will just stop for a couple of seconds and then move on. I had a ton of duplicate drivers which I removed and had Windows reinstall everything and I thought the problem got better but it's back. I checked for extra drivers again but they are still gone. The problem is annoying but not terminal. Any ideas what might be going on and how I might correct it? Thanks for any help!
