Hello everyone I was reading an article in a computer magazine reffering to networks called EXTRANETS. I would like to know if there is any documentation on this topic, i.e. what is it? who would use it? where could it be used? bla bla bla.... I've done a search on google but I got some links that didn't really help, and others that were broken or pages that did not exist.

I'm not sure but at a large company i worked for they used the following terms.

intranet - is pretty much you internal netork that is not accessible to the outside world.  this may consist of several domains such as usa.microsoft.com, italy.microsoft.com, japan.microsoft.com.

Extranet -  emcompasses the outside world.  like surfing to www.duxcw.com from inside of microsoft.

the internet - everything lumped together.

....I think that is how is goes anyway.  People at one of my old jobs used these terms I always got confused, because nobody was consistent with their use of these terms.  I always thought these were terms computer geeks made up.

Then they disseminated these words into the corporate world and thus were generally reserved for people who didn't know what they were talking about.  Now the computer geeks are all kicking back and laughing.

But maybe I'm all wrong and somebody can clarify them.

Company terminology varies a lot, even on standard terms. Ours are the best:

Shooter - LCD Projector

Blocker - Firewall (software or hardware)

Whatchamahoosit - SCSI Terminator

Backup thing - 200GB Raid5 NAS (also called "The Brain")

I'm not sure either, but i believe an extranet would be a local intranet connected to anothers intranet.  Kinda like vpn.  Or a company who allows their vendors or suppliers to use their network in a joint effort.

Thanks Larry for the link it was helpful as to understand a lot of things about extranets. If you have any other links about extranets it would be helpful, if not that's ok. Again thank you very much.

As a matter of fact, I never heard the term before and just searched google.com for the definition.  They'll probably call it something else next year.  Larry

Maybe that's why I haven't heard of it before...  I don't read much of the .net propaganda.  And soap snows me or I fall asleep within a half a minute of looking at anything on the subject--more software types trying to express themselves with weak communications skills...  Larry  Cool

My management course last year covered (for about 12 seconds) extranets.  Strange, thought i was asleep for that "lecture".
