Get this
http://www.aquamark3.com/
and compare it to this
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/athlon64-3200_9.html
(they do a good job).

last question.
Since benchmarks seemed to turn into the topic of conversation. I left memtest 86 running on my Corsair XMS 512-3200C2 memory b4 I left for work......I thought it would stop automatically. Well.....I got back to my house it turns out it was still running......stopped it around 20 hrs. I know not to do this everday. But would this by any means hurt my memory? The memory stick was pretty warm.....but by no means was it close to burning me.
Brad
on the plus side it passed 91 tests

No problem running it.
If a computer can pass 8 hours of prime95, we can say the computer is stable. I use it to test memory timing, with all those dual channel stuff it a good way to test it. If the timing is too agressive , the program will halt in the few first minute.

I went and disabled AMD Cool n' Quiet......all of a sudden CPU speed shot up from 1 GHz to 2208 Mhz ....voltage went back from 1.12 to 1.548V (according to cpu-z). UT2004 frame rates shot up by 50fps. Apparently it was throttling my voltage regardless of being active or not. What the is up w/ that? Oh well.......left it off and everything is fine now. Thanks for bearing w/ me through this. Now all I gotta do is fix my video card and I'll have a reliable system.

I would run the benchmark mentioned in my last post with the feature on and then with it off, and compare. Could be that Sandra does not "know" about the feature, and that is is switching normally during Sandra's measurements.

Still wouldn't explain why during games it would stay disabled. But I will try what you suggested, when I get back.
The only disadvantage I see so far w/ disabling 'cool n' quiet' is that the cpu temp goes up by about 10C.......so it's ideling around 43-44C. Think it got to 55, maybe 60 while it was being loaded for a burnin. That's not a terribly bad temp to run a comp at.....correct?

Hmmm.........I have the most recent bios that is not a beta. And the second most recent overall. I'm reluctant to go back to the beta do to some prior problems that may or may not have been related. But I should try that too, thanks

This is interesting......
known limitations of AMD Cool 'n' Quiet: (Taken from a driver .zip I found)
1) The processor performance state may not be restored to the maximum state if the
CPU runs at 100 percent. This problem occurs if the computer is 100 percent busy
when the power policy changes.
For more information and support options, please refer to the following website:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330512
2) "System Properties" reports wrong processor speed.
For more information, please refer to the following website:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303602
3) The Processor speed may be reported incorrectly in Windows XP.
For more information, please refer to the following website:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;316965
Still doesn't mention why mine would never adjust itself.....but maybe i'm getting closer

grr......so frustrating.......I tried the newest bios......newest drivers......and tried different programs that used about 20%, 60%, and 90% of cpu resources........I just couldn't get this to go up from 1 GHz w/ Cool n' Quiet enabled. It just sat there being cool n' quiet. Once I get my video card issue resolved I might come back and try to figure this out. I read about other people having same problems and usually a new bios update or drivers fixed it. Also read somewhere where it might be a memory issue. Oh well.
