SMC Barricade Router 7004BR Problem
Krayzie May-14-02 04:20 AM
I recently installed the newest firmware from the smc site, v1.93s, and the upgrade completed without a problem. After the upgrade was done I tried to access the router through but nothing comes up. I can still access the other computers that are hooked up to the router but the router no longer attempts to connect to the internet and I can no longer access the setup screen. I was wondering if anyone knew what I could do to fix this problem. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Power cycle it. If you are running Windows 9x/Me Start, Run, Enter winipcfg, select the network adapter going to the router, and release and renew the IP address from the router's DHCP server. You should see it change. For Win NT/2000/XP open a DOS window and type...

C:\>ipconfig /?

And follow the resulting instructions to release and renew the IP. Larry

When I try to renew the IP address it says "Error: DHCP Server Unavailable. Renewing Adapter." Any other ideas? I'm still waiting for SMC to responded to my email. I guess I'll call them again and hopefully they'll actually pick up the phone this time.

What do the LEDs on the network adapter and router tell you? Or, what are they doing, and I'll explain what they mean. I'd try it from another PC. Larry

the network card light is lit and the router has 4 green lights lit, one for each computer plugged in, and one blinking brown light which I'm guessing means theres stuff transfering or whatnot. Right now I'm using the router as a hub and am using Internet Connection Sharing to share the dsl with the other computers. So far SMC still hasnt replied so guess i'll call them again tomorrow.

There is another way to access the router: a serial connection and telnet. Itís a pain; but I have done it in a similar situation, and it worked. If it works, it will allow you to change the local IP address of the router. Look at your user manual, Appendix A, for details. Believe I plugged together a null MODEM adapter, gender changer, and serial cable I had on hand and it worked the first time (got lucky). Larry

I noticed something you have not done that i found works for me... After you turn off the systems., unplug any hubs/switches, and then turn off the cable/dsl modems. They have a small amount of memory that stores the mac address of the computers that are connected. After a few minutes, plug in the router to the modem, and then turn on the modem. Now it should refresh, and allow the router's mac address to be stored on it's memory, and after you make sure in IE that in the connection settings, proxy is turned off, and the dhcp is set to auto, you aught to be able to go right to the router config. I have a Linux, 2 98 machines, 2 xp and one win2k system, and all of them work fine, and they see all the shares, and not a problem at all. I had a ##### of a time setting up, until i turned off my cable modem and all the connections and machines, and turned them on one at a time...Modem, Switch, My main system...setup the Router, firewall and then each computer after that...no problems at all...Hope it helps
